Apply Now: $1 Million Grant Funding for Your African eWaste Solutions

By Wayan Vota on April 29, 2019

solar ewaste challenge

The off-grid solar technology industry is nascent but growing quickly. In 2017, the off-grid solar power sector provided energy access for 73 million households – over 360 million people – with significant year-over-year growth expected into the future.

E-waste generated by the off-grid solar power sector represents less than 0.1% of global e-waste streams, but investment now will ensure the industry’s growth is sustainable over the long term and further enhance the sector’s reputation as a leader in environmental responsibility.

Global LEAP Solar E-Waste Challenge

The Global LEAP Solar E-Waste Challenge will make $1 million in grant funding available to companies with innovative approaches to e-waste management in the off-grid solar sector in sub-Saharan Africa.

Applicants should have innovative solutions to end-of-life solar power products, including

  • Solar lights and lanterns
  • Solar home systems
  • Solar-powered appliances

Solar e-waste consists of all the materials and component parts that make up these products. This ranges from lead acid and lithium-based batteries to copper cabling and the silicon in solar panels.

Apply Now! Deadline to apply is May 15, 2019.

Grant Funding Expenses

Individual awards will range from $50,000-$200,000 to e-Waste companies, solar power installers, and service providers who submit budgets that show grant funding for the following activities:

  • Technical assistance: Support provided to participants by external experts relevant to the planning, design, and implementation of e-waste management activities and operations.
  • Research and analysis: Staff time or consultants dedicated to desk and/or field research necessary for the planning, design, and implementation of e-waste management activities and operations.
  • Equipment purchases: Purchase of materials and equipment required to implement e-waste management activities. Note that this does not include purchase of commercial property, facilities, or vehicles.
  • Operational support: Staff time and other costs associated with general implementation of ewaste management activities. Note that this does not include direct subsidy of solar e-waste processing fees or subsidy of pre-existing operations.
