Best ways to pay African-based freelancers ?

I have a few projects I would love to hire African-based freelancers for, but I do not know how I am going to pay them. Paypal is restricted in Africa and wire transfer fees can be greater than the payments.

So what works that is cheap and easy?

I have heard of people using Alertpay as a paypal alternative.

I would check out these guys, SamaSource, http://samasource.org/ for help with this. They deal with paying freelancers in Africa all the time. It's what they do.
