By Wayan Vota on April 24, 2013

If you have the vision of Nigerians using old Internet Explorer browsers to view your precious web content, you are living in the past. TechLoy reports that Google’s web browser, Chrome overtook Internet Explorer for the first time in Nigeria in December 2012.

According to website analytics company, StatCounter, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer usage declined in Nigeria from 32.89% in January 2012 to 19.29% in January 2013, while Chrome’s usage rose from 14.56% in January 2012 to 22.05% in January 2013.

This news comes one year after the fast-growing browser overtook Firefox for the first time globally as at November 2011, as it took 25.69% of the worldwide market compared to Firefox’s 25.23%.

Now that’s just desktops. In the mobile space, a whole other change is taking place. TechLoy reports that Opera’s share of mobile browsing is down to 59.5% in January 2013, while the UC browser is now 22.07% and Nokia XPress is at just 13%.

The next big milestone: when mobile beats desktops in Nigeria. Have we passed that one yet?
