RSVP Now: What is the Future of Technology and Democracy in 2025?

By Wayan Vota on August 27, 2014

RSVP Now for Miles Beyond Mobiles

It’s only 2014, but the future is here. Last December, Thai journalists used drones to record protests, giving a birds-eye view of crowd sizes and police conduct. In June, a computer passed the Turing Test, convincing one-third of judges it was human. In August, Harvard researchers demonstrated 1,024 tiny robots working together without any central direction. And Google Glass may soon immerse us even more deeply in the digital world.

  • What does cutting-edge technology mean for the future of democracy?
  • What could we have done differently if we’d predicted the importance of mobiles fifteen years ago?
  • What can we do if we gaze far enough down the road ahead?

On September 15th, FHI 360 will convene tech leaders and scientists with international development experts to discuss the implications of future tech on democracy, media and human rights between now and 2025. Our schedule will include these thought-provoking sessions:

  • Nanotechnology and Democracy: Leili Fatehi, University of Minnesota
  • Global Internet Access: Jack Deasy, O3b Networks
  • Drone Journalism: Matthew Schroyer, DroneJournalism.org
  • Artificial Intelligence: Dr. Doug Lenat, Cycorp
  • Predictive Markets: John McGinnis, Northwestern University
  • Wearable Tech & Google Glass: Rohan Puri, MIT
  • Group discussion: the Tech-Savvy Dictator & the Cyber-Smart Activist

Please RSVP now to join us for a creative and exploratory day-long discussion on what the future might look like, and how we in international development can help ensure it is free and democratic for all citizens of the world. We look forward to seeing you there.
